Ogbonna: How Italian-Nigerian defender is enjoying West Ham’s European adventure

Angelo Ogbonna says West Ham United are enjoying their European form at the moment.

The Hammers are participating in Europe for the third consecutive season after reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League during the 2021-22 season before going on to feature in the 2022-23 Europa Conference League which they won by defeating Fiorentina in the final for their first European title in 58 years

West Ham are back in the Europa League this season and saw their 17-game unbeaten run come to an end when they lost 2-1 to Olympiakos last time out. Regardless of the setback, Ogbonna is taking each game across all competitions one at a time.

“We’re enjoying our time in Europe. It’s very good for the club,” the Italian-Nigerian defender said ahead of the return leg against Olympiakos at the London Stadium.

“Unfortunately our [winning] run came to an end against Olympiakos but we’re still at the top of our group and we’re looking forward to the game.

“Every competition is very important. We’re not just looking at one competition.

“We play in one of the toughest leagues in the world but we’re looking at things game by game, and we look at things by each individual game.”

Ogbonna joined the Hammers from Juventus in 2015 and says the transformation at the club has been massive.

“I think there’s been a massive change in this club in my time here, across the board and every department has improved,” he explained.

“Playing for a third successive season in Europe is massive and it affects everyone.

“Tomorrow will be a very important game for us.”

Ogbonna has only featured twice in the Premier League this season but has been more active in cup competitions, captaining the Hammers in the Europa League games against Backa Topola and Olympiakos and also in the EFL Cup third round victory over Lincoln City.
