Nigeria National League (NNL) side Gombe United have appointed Abdullahi Tyabo Umar as their new head coach, Afrosport reports.
Umar was unveiled on Monday in Gombe after putting pen to paper on a short-term deal, and replaces Bala Nkiyu, who was sacked due to a run of poor results by the Savannah scorpions.
Gombe United general manager, Anas Bamusa, said the decision to appoint the new coach was based on merit and a shared vision for the club’s future.
“The choice of Coach Tyabo was based on his track record,” said Bamusa at the unveiling on Monday. “He belongs to a school of thought that aligns with the football philosophy loved by Gombe United fans.
“Considering his relationship with our former Technical Adviser, Coach Aliyu Zubairu, and the remarkable transformation he brought to the team in his time, we believe Coach Umar has the ability to rebuild and elevate this squad just as Zubairu did.
“Somebody as young and visionary as Abdullahi Umar shares the same ambitions I have for this club. I strongly believe that together, we can restore Gombe United to its rightful place of greatness,” Bamusa stated.
Umar served as assistant coach at Akwa United at some point in his very young coaching career.
