Atletico Madrid crashed out of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup despite defeating Botafogo 1-0 in their final Group B game in Pasadena on Monday, Afrosport reports.
The Spanish side came into the game off the back of a 3-1 win over MLS side Seattle Sounders and were tied on three points with reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain who lost to Botafogo in their previous game.
Atleti were however further behind as PSG were 2-0 up against the Sounders, with goals in either half by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Morocco full-back Achraf Hakimi.
With the game winding down at the Rose Bowl, Atleti finally broke the deadlock in the 87th minute when Antoine Griezmann tapped in from Julian Alvarez’s pass.
Diego Simeone’s men needed two more goals to be able to topple Botafogo from second place but the Brazilian outfit remained resolute with seven additional minutes to clinch it and join PSG in the round of 16.
