Nigeria’s sprint star, Udodi Onwuzurike qualified for the men’s 100m event at the 2023 World Athletics Championships after running a personal best of 9.92 seconds on Friday.
Onwuzurike had a commanding performance in Sacramento as he led the men’s 100m quarter-finals of the American National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) West Preliminaries.
The 20-year-old who schools in Stanford University is now the first Nigerian to run a sub 10 seconds in the 2023 season.
He is now the 13th Nigerian to run a sub-10seconds in history and he is just 0.07 seconds shy of the Nigerian record set by Olusoji Fasuba in May 2006.
In April, Onwuzurike qualified for the 200m event at the 2023 World Athletics Championships after meeting the qualifying time with a previous season’s best of 20.14 seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays in California.
He has bettered the 200m record with a new personal best of 19.91 seconds at the PAC-12 Championships earlier this month.
The 2023 World Athletics Championships is scheduled to hold from August 19-27 in the Hungarian city of Budapest.
