Nigeria, Senegal maintain places in new FIFA rankings, Morocco drop one spot

Nigeria’s men’s national football team, the Super Eagles, remain unchanged in the newly released rankings by the world football governing body FIFA on Thursday.

The Super Eagles, who moved a spot upward from 40 to 39 in the last rankings released in June, maintain their place as the 39th best football team in the world and the sixth in Africa.

Since the last rankings were released, Nigeria have only played one competitive game, a 3-2 win over Sierra Leone in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in Monrovia, Liberia.

Elsewhere, Africa’s highest-ranked team, Morocco, dropped a spot from 13th to 14th, having not played a single game since the last rankings. Like Nigeria, reigning African champions Senegal remain unchanged, rooted in 18th place and second on the continent.

North African powerhouses Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt also remain untouched as they keep their 31st, 33rd, and 34th spots, respectively, while also remaining the third, fourth, and fifth best sides in Africa.

Africa’s seventh-ranked team, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, also enjoyed an upward movement in the latest rankings, moving from 43rd to 42nd.

Also, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso all dropped a spot in the rankings as Les Aigles moved from 50 to 51, while the Elephants dropped from 51 to 52, and Les Etalons moved from 55 to 56, but they kept their respective places as the eighth, ninth, and tenth best teams in Africa.

The next FIFA World Ranking will be published on September 21, 2023.
