NBA: Suns’ Durant becomes 12th player to surpass 27,000 career points mark

NBA: Kevin Durant impresses in Suns debut

Phoenix Suns forward and two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant has surpassed the 27,000-career point mark as he became the 12th player in NBA history to do so.

The 35-year-old achieved the feat with a late dunk in the fourth quarter of the Suns shocking 115-114 loss against the San Antonio Spurs at the Footprint Center on Tuesday night.

Durant, who finished the game with a team-high 26 points and seven assists, is the second active player to reach 27,000 career points, joining LeBron James, who is the league’s all-time scoring leader with 38,740 points.

The 2014 regular season MVP reached the landmark in 990 career games as he became the fourth fastest player to achieve the milestone behind Wilt Chamberlain (780), Michael Jordan (852), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (965).

Barring any injuries, Durant, a 13-time All-Star and a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team, is expected to break into the top ten of the all-time rankings just before next year’s All-Star break in February 2024.

He currently sits 312 points behind Elvin Hayes (27,313) in 11th and 408 points behind 1983 Finals MVP Moses Malone (27,409), who is tenth on the list.

Durant will look to build towards that number and close the gap at the top when the Suns take on the Spurs in the second game of their double header in Phoenix on Thursday night.
