Napoli coach Garcia praises Osimhen’s penalty gesture towards Politano

Napoli manager Rudi Garcia stated that Victor Osimhen allowing Matteo Politano take a penalty in the Partenopei’s 4-0 Serie A victory over Leece is a sign he cares about his teammates.

The Nigerian forward has been in the spotlight since he missed a penalty at Bologna last weekend which led to mockery of him on Napoli’s TikTok account that drew global condemnation.

He scored in their win over Udinese in midweek and did so off the bench against Lecee on Saturday. Napoli were also handed a penalty against Udinese which Piotr Zielinski scored and Garcia was full praise for the contributions of all his attackers in the Lecce game.

“I’m happy for [Leo] Ostigard and I’m happy it came from a cross because my staff have been doing a lot of work on set-pieces on the training ground,” Garcia told the club website.

“[Giovanni] Simeone played really well in the first half and deserved a goal. Then [Victor] Osimhen came on with fresh legs and he proved decisive, as he often is.

“Victor also let [Matteo] Politano take the penalty and showed once again how much he cares about his team-mates.

“I’m pleased for [Gianluca] Gaetano too as he scored on his return. It’s a tremendous joy for a Neapolitan youngster like him.

“We have to use our squad because we have lots of games and we’re capable of excelling in every competition.”

Napoli will now turn their attention to their crunch UEFA Champions League Group C clash with record 14-time champions Real Madrid at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Tuesday night.
