MotoGP: Injured Jorge Martin to miss Thailand season opener

Reigning champion Jorge Martin will miss the MotoGP season-opener in Thailand after sustaining multiple fractures, his Aprilia Racing team said on Monday.

Martin has reportedly suffered a fracture to his left foot and a triple fracture to his left hand and is set to undergo surgery in Barcelona on Tuesday.

The new injury, however, is not related to the ones he suffered earlier this month, having undergone surgery after fracturing his hand and foot following a crash during pre-season testing in Sepang, Malaysia.

“Jorge Martin suffered a complex fracture of the radius, some carpal bones on the left side and an ipsilateral calcaneal fracture during a training session,” Aprilia said in a statement.

“After a surgical consultation, it was decided to proceed with surgery, which will take place tomorrow at the Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona.”

The 27-year-old, who was close to being cleared to return for the Thailand Grand Prix, picked up the injury after suffering an accident during training at the Menargues karting circuit in Spain.

Aprilia revealed that Martin will be replaced by test rider Lorenzo Savadori at Thailand’s Chang International Circuit, with the race set for 2 March.
