Mathys Tel: Tottenham forward vows not to allow racist abuse affect him

Tottenham Hotspur forward Mathys Tel has vowed not to allow the racial abuse directed at him during the UEFA Super Cup defeat by Paris Saint-Germain to affect him, Afrosport reports.

The 20-year-old Frenchman was subject to abuse online after he missed a spot-kick during the shootout, which Spurs lost 4-3 after the game ended 2-2 in regular time.

Tottenham rallied round Tel with head coach Thomas Frank stating those who committed the vile act did not represent the club in any way.

Tel went on to play in the Premier League opener against newly-promoted Burnley with the Lillywhites winning 3-0.

Reacting to last Wednesday’s incident, the former Bayern Munich player said on his Instagram account:  “After the last few days have passed, I wanted to thank you for all your messages of support! I was also disappointed about Wednesday night, but racism has no place in our society.

“Every day is a learning curve, and every day is a lesson. I know where I come from, where I started, and none of this will bring me down. With work and humility, respect reigns.”
