Manuel Neuer gets two-match German Cup ban for red card against Leverkusen

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been given a two-match German Cup ban for receiving a red card in their defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

Neuer was sent off for the first time in his 866-game career as Bayern were dumped out of the German Cup after suffering a 1-0 home loss to Leverkusen in the round of 16.

The 38-year-old was given his marching orders in the 17th minute at Allianz Arena after colliding with Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong, with Nathan Tella’s 69th-minute header the nail in the coffin for the hosts.

GermanNeuer FA (DFB) disciplinary committee confirmed on Thursday that a “two-match ban” was the right sanction for “preventing an obvious goal-scoring opportunity for a foul without a goal being scored”.

This means Neuer, whose contract at Bayern runs out at the end of the ongoing season, will have to wait until either the Super Cup or next season’s German Cup to serve the ban, as the Bavarians are already out of this season’s competition.

The former Germany international, however, apologised to his teammates for the red card after the game.

Neuer is expected to be in goal this weekend when the Bundesliga leaders host Heidenheim on Saturday, 7 December.
