Lukaku strike hands Napoli fourth Serie A title in history

Romelu Lukaku was on the scoresheet as Napoli defeated 2-0 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Friday night to win their fourth Serie A title in history, Afrosport reports.

The Partenopei came into the final game of the season at the top of the table, one point ahead of Inter Milan, who faced Como in a simultaneous title decider.

The Nerazzurri however went top of the live standings when Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij found the back of the net from Hakan Calhanoglu corner kick in the 20th minute.

The Partenopei were able to respond against Cagliari in 42nd minute when former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay received a cross from Matteo Politano on the right flank and sent in an audacious scissor kick in, much to the delight of the home support.

At the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, Como were reduced to 10 men when retiring goalkeeper Pepe Reina received a red card for bringing down the onrushing Mehdi Taremi outside the box.

This allowed Inter to take further control of the game as Joaquin Correa scored the second goal with a composed finish in the 51st minute.

However, at the same minute in Naples, Antonio Conte’s side were 2-0 up after former Inter forward Lukaku latched on to a long ball from Amir Rrahmani and showed incredible strength to ease past the Cagliari defence and cooly slot the ball past goalkeeper Alen Sherri.

The victory meant Napoli won the their fourth Serie A crown (after 1987, 1990 and 2023) by one point and avoided a potential playoff with Inter on Monday had both teams finished level on points.


The triumph was also the third Conte, making him to the manager in Serie A history to win the Scudetto with three different clubs having won three with Juventus in 2012, 2013, 2014 and Inter Milan in 2021.

While the title defence of Simone Inzaghi’s side is over, the have another opportunity to win silverware when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final in Munich next Saturday.
