Ligue 1: Folarin Balogun scores winner as AS Monaco go top

Boniface continues impressive goalscoring form in Leverkusen draw

Folarin Balogun scored the winner as AS Monaco recorded a 2-1 win over Rennes on Saturday night to move to the top of the Ligue 1 standings, Afrosport reports.

The Principality outfit played out a 2-2 draw with Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League in midweek but started on the front foot away at Rennes when former Paris Saint-Germain defender Thilo Kehrer headed the ball in in the sixth minute.

Rennes responded five minutes later through Ludovic Blas but Monaco got back ahead in the 22nd minute thanks to Balogun and his lobbed effort over goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

It was the American forward of Nigerian heritage’s third consecutive league goal after failing to score in the opening four league games.

The result sees Monaco remain unbeaten after seven games and sent them temporarily three points clear of PSG who play at OGC Nice on Sunday evening.

Balogun will next hope to impress new United States manager Mauricio Pochettino in the upcoming friendlies against Panama and Mexico on October 12 and 15 respectively.
