Ivory Coast victory not enough to progress in Toulon Tournament

The Ivory Coast U-23 national team have been knocked out the 2023 Toulon Tournament despite a 2-1 win over the Japan U-19 team at the Stade Parsemain in Fos-sur-Mer on Tuesday.

The Elephants had claimed a 5-3 penalty shootout win over Panama U-23 in their Group C opener before losing 1-0 Morocco U-20 in the next game.

N’Dri Koffi gave the West Africans the lead in the 11th minute before Toki Yukitomo equalised for the Japanese nine minutes later. Abdramame konate scored the winner for the Ivorians three minutes to the hour mark.

The Ivorians finished second in Group C behind Panama who defeated Morocco 9-8 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in 90 minutes courtesy of goals from Abdellah Raihani (Morocco) and Angel Orelien (Panama).

Ricardo Phillips missed the first spot kick for Panama during the shootout before Mohamed Radid missed for the Moroccans to take the game to sudden death.

Abdellah Bentayg missed his penalty and it gave Edilson Carrasquilla the opportunity to win the game by converting his penalty which he did.

Morocco ultimately finished third in Group C with four points, one point ahead of Japan in last place.

Through to the semi-finals of the Toulon Tournament are hosts France, Australia, Panama and Mexico.
