AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Ghana defender Mensah ruled out of Madagascar trip

The Black Stars of Ghana will be without Auxerre left-back Gideon Mensah for their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar on Sunday.

Mensah reported to the national team camp in Acrra earlier in the week but he could not participate in the training session due to a knee injury.

The 24-year-old managed injury until the end of the season and he has been excused by Ghana coach Chris Hughton to recover fully.

A statement on the Ghana FA website read: “Gideon picked up a knee injury during the season but his club managed him conservatively until the end of the season. Upon assessment in camp on Monday, we decided to excuse him from this game in order not to aggravate the injury. ”

We expect him to have enough rest during the break to be able to recover on time for next season.”

Mensah played 26 Ligue 1 games in the just-concluded campaign but could not help Auxerre avoid relegation to the second division.

The Accra-born star made his Black Stars debut in an AFCON qualifier against South Africa in 2019 and he was also part of the country’s squad to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar where he played just a game.
