Howe ignores Slot’s calling Newcastle a small club

Panathinaikos appoint Rafa Benitez as new head coach

Eddie Howe has decided to ignore Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s comments about Newcastle United being a small club over the transfer saga that embroiled Alexander Isak during the summer, Afrosport reports.

Isak completed a British record £125 million move on transfer deadline day but has failed to settle at Anfield and picked up a groin injury in the 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League which sees him doubtful for this weekend’s Premier League game with Brentford.

Slot stated after Isak’s injury: “You cannot compare a player who maybe hasn’t trained or played in pre-season for a smaller club to then go to Liverpool.”

Howe, ahead of Saturday’s home tie with Fulham, responded to Slot’s comments: “I don’t think that’s wise for me to get involved in those discussions. Alex is no longer at this football club, so I won’t comment on it.

“I think the set-up [training facilities] here is very good. It’s not perfect. We’ve got things to improve and to grow, but the club and the owners here have developed the facilities since I’ve been here very, very well.

“You can see there’s building work going on currently to hopefully help us deliver even better in the future. But I’ve got no complaints. We’ve got elite athletes here, many of them.”

Nick Woltemade was brought in as Isak’s replacement and has hit the ground running at St. James’ Park with five goals in nine competitive games.

Howe also said that new signing Yoane Wissa, will need up to six weeks to get back to full fitness when he returns from his current knee injury that has kept him sidelined since the September international break.

He is yet to make an appearance for the Magpies since joining from Brentford.
