Kobbie Mainoo has expressed his surprise over getting his competitive debut for the Manchester United as a starter in their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Charlton Athletic.
The 17-year-old Anglo-Ghanian played for 60 minutes before being replaced by Casemiro as the Red Devils won 3-0.
Mainoo won a lot of praise for his performance, which has continued United’s trend of producing talented players.
He was part of the team that won the FA Youth Cup last season, beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Old Trafford, and he has described playing at the Theatre of Dreams again as amazing.
“I looked at the teamsheet and I was starting. I was a bit shocked but I had to do my job. Yeah, there were some butterflies but it was just exciting,” Mainoo told club website.
“I played at Old Trafford in the Youth Cup and I remember that feeling was an amazing feeling. To have that again is brilliant.”
Mainoo went on to state that getting more game time with the United first team is his goal going forward.
“To stay around it and to keep on getting more games is the ultimate goal. I want to stay at this club, I’ve been here my whole life.”
Erik ten Hag’s team will face Nottingham Forest in the two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final on January 24 and 31.
Before that, they will turn their attention to the Premier League this weekend where they lock horns with cross town rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
