2026WCQ: Igbokwe backs Chelle to lead Super Eagles to victory against Rwanda

Former Nigeria U-23 forward, Goodluck Igbokwe has expressed confidence that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will lead the team to victory in the forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The Portugal-based forward spoke exclusively with Afrosport and shared his thoughts as the three-time African champions get set for the crucial games on Friday and next Monday.

“For the new Super Eagles coach, I think, for him to be appointed as the head coach, it means the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), believes he can get the job done,” Igbokwe said.

“It is not just anybody that can become the coach of the Super Eagles, so I believe he has the experience to handle the calibre of players at hand at the moment.”

For the forthcoming games, the Rio Ave U-23 striker said: “I believe the coach will be able to qualify us for the World Cup, I think he is up to the task. We don’t have a choice, we just have to qualify because we missed the last World Cup.

“This one is non-negotiable, and considering the kind of players we have presently, top players in their right, they are in top form too, i don’t think we should find it difficult beating Rwanda and Zimbabwe, although it won’t be easy, but we have what it takes to win.”

Igbokwe was part of the Nigerian U-23 team in 2019 under coach Salisu Yusuf.

The 22-year-old Right2Win Academy graduate moved to Belgium and featured for the U-23 side of Genk, before sealing a move to Portugal.
