FIFACWC: Trezeguet misses penalty as Al Ahly & Inter Miami share spoils in opening game

Former Aston Villa forward Trezeguet missed from the penalty spot as Al Ahly and Inter Miami played out a goalless draw in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup opener at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, Afrosport reports.

The revamped intercontinental tournament drew a lot of attention in the build up, with Argentina veteran Lionel Messi the centre of attraction for this fixture.

It was however Al Ahly that started the brightest in Miami Gardens with Wessam Abou Ali forcing a sharp save from goalkeeper Oscar Ustari after eight minutes.

Ustari had to remain alert to deny Emam Ashour a few moments later before denying Ali Achraf Dari from point-blank range.

It seemed like the opener would come in the 43rd minute when substitute Zizo went down in the penalty box, however Ustari was there to deny Trezeguet with a double save.

Inter Miami were the better side in the second half and it was goalkeeper Mohamed El denied notable goalscoring chances by Tadeo Allende and Messi.

Al Ahly will next be in action against Brazilian side Palmeiras on Thursday in East Rutherford while Inter Miami will take on FC Porto in Atlanta on the same day.
