The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) have confirmed the United States of America will play all its group games during the 2023 FIBA World Cup in the Philippines.
The tournament will be hosted by the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan. The three host nations have the option to pick which teams they want in their country based on commercial preferences.
FIBA also confirmed that Canada will play in Indonesia while Slovenia will be in Japan.
“FIBA’s Central Board has confirmed, after consultation with the host nations, that USA will play in the Philippines, Slovenia will travel to Japan and Canada will land in Indonesia. Both Slovenia and Canada have qualified for the World Cup, while USA are in a good position to clinch a berth in the tournament field in the last Window of the Qualifiers,” the FIBA statement read.
“Each host could select a preferred team based on commercial reasons, as their choice will have no impact on the integrity of the event or the draw process.”
The 2023 FIBA World Cup will take place from August 25 to September 10. Before then, the draws for the tournament will take place in Manila on April 29.
There are two venues hosting four groups in Manila, and two groups in both Okinawa and Jakarta.
As hosts of the group and final phase, the Philippines will be put in Pot 1 in the draw, along with other best-ranked teams after the final window of the World Cup qualifiers which will be played in February 2023, where the other teams for the tournament will be determined.
