Fenerbahce dismiss Mourinho after missing out on Champions League

Fenerbahce have parted company with manager Jose Mourinho following their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League league phase, Afrosport reports.

The Turkish giants were eliminated after a 1-0 defeat to Benfica in the second leg of their play-off tie at the Estadio da Luz on Wednesday, and will settle for the Europa League this season.

A club statement read: “We have parted ways with Jose Mourinho, who has been the manager of our Professional Football A Team since the 2024-25 season.

“We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.”

Mourinho was appointed in July 2024 after leaving Italian outfit AS Roma. His arrival in Istanbul was met with fanfare, as thousands gathered to welcome the Portuguese coach — many hopeful he would bring an end to Galatasaray’s domestic dominance.

However, Fenerbahce finished second in the Turkish Super Lig last season for the fourth consecutive campaign, trailing their fierce rivals by 11 points, and are still in search of their first league title since 2014.

Mourinho oversaw 62 games for the Istanbul club, recording 37 wins, 14 draws, and 11 defeats — a win rate of 59.68%.

The 62-year-old becomes the second high-profile manager dismissed in Turkey within 24 hours, following Besiktas’ decision to part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjær after their Conference League exit.

Fenerbahce currently sit seventh in the league table with one win and one draw from their opening two fixtures. They travel to face Genclerbirligi on Sunday and have yet to confirm a replacement for the Portuguese.
