La Liga has filed an official complaint with Spain’s National Police following alleged racist abuse directed at Real Madrid forwards Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappu during their league match against Real Oviedo on 24 August, Afrosport reports.
The alleged incidents took place at Oviedo’s Carlos Tartiere Stadium, where sections of the crowd are reported to have made monkey chants on several occasions.
The league submitted its complaint to the National Police General Commissariat, providing evidence from Movistar’s television programme “El Día Después” as well as widely circulated footage on social media.
Madrid won the game 3–0, with Mbappe scoring a brace and Vinícius adding the third.
Oviedo president Martin Pelaez addressed the matter earlier this week, stating: “In view of the acts of racism that are said to have taken place last Sunday, I would like to tell you that this institution, Real Oviedo, condemns any act of racism, machismo, any discrimination.
“We are already trying to investigate what happened with our security people and if there is the slightest evidence that it happened, you can be sure that we will punish it, that we will repress it. It cannot continue to happen here or anywhere else.”
Vinícius has repeatedly been subjected to racist abuse at stadiums across Spain and on social media. In March 2024, the Brazil international broke down in tears during a press conference, admitting that racism was making him “less and less” inclined to play football.
However, Spanish authorities have begun to take firmer action in recent years. In June 2024, three people were sentenced to eight months in prison for racially abusing Vinícius during a match at Valencia, marking the first conviction of its kind in Spain.
More recently, a fan was fined €60,001 and banned from sporting venues for two years for online abuse, while others have received suspended prison terms and fines for incidents at matches involving Real Valladolid and Mallorca.
