FA Cup Draw: Kompany set for Man City reunion in quarterfinals

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany will reunite with his former club Manchester City as both sides were drawn in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.

The 36-year-old enjoyed a fruitful 11 years as a player at the Etihad Stadium, winning 12 titles, including two FA Cups and four Premier Leagues, where he played under multiple managers, including current boss Pep Guardiola.

Kompany has been in management since retirement in 2020, coaching at Anderlecht in his native Belgium before joining Burnley last summer after their relegation in the Premier League. He has turned the fortunes of the club around as the Clarets enjoy a 12-point lead in the English second division and look primed for an instant return to the top flight.

Burnley defeated Fleetwood Town 1-0 in Wednesday’s fifth-round clash while City trashed Bristol City 3-0 at Ashton Gate on Tuesday. The former City captain [Kompany] and his boys will travel to the Etihad Stadium to face the Cityzens.

In the other quarter-final fixtures, Manchester United will take on fellow Premier League side Fulham after their late comeback 3-1 win over West Ham United. The Cottagers meanwhile comfortably saw off Leeds United 2-0 at Craven Cottage.

Brighton & Hove Albion will take on League Two Grimsby Town who produced one of the shocks of the fifth-round by dispatching Southampton 2-1 at St. Mary’s. The final game will be an all-Championship affair between Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane following their respective 1-0 and 2-1 victories over Premier League outfits Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.

All quarter-final fixtures will take place on Saturday, March 18.
