F1: Sergio Perez makes admission on Red Bull future

F1: Sergio Perez confident of turning around poor form at Mexico City GP

Sergio Perez has admitted that he does not know the future will hold for him at Red Bull Racing following the conclusion of the 2024 Formula 1 season, Afrosport reports.

The Mexican has had a dismal season which saw Red Bull finish third in the constructors’ championship behind McLaren and Ferrari while Max Verstappen took a fourth consecutive drivers’ championship.

Perez’s woes were compounded at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix where he recorded his fourth DNF of the campaign and ultimately ended eighth in the drivers’ championship, 285 points behind Verstappen.

All this has put scrutiny on his future despite having a contract with Red Bull for 2025 and 2026. The former Sauber driver had constantly affirmed he will be with the team next year but has now changed his tone, asserting he does not know his future holds as Red Bull prepare for a crunch post-season review.

“Well at the moment I don’t know,” Perez said. “I just know I’ve got a contract to race this year, unless something changes in the coming days that’s going to be the situation next year.

“I’ve got a contract which I signed earlier in the year to race for the team for the next two years. So we’ll see what happens and how the conversation goes in the coming days.”

“…We will discuss what’s the situation from both parties if we are able to reach an agreement. If not, like I say, I have a contact for next year.”

Meanwhile, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has confirmed that talks would take place with Sergio Perez.

“Obviously, those discussions will happen between Checo [Perez] and the team,” he explained. “Now we’ve got the season out of the way, we’ll sit down with him and reflect on the season, and obviously, where it’s gone wrong.

“Collectively, we will work out what is the right and appropriate way forward. Checo has been a great servant of this team.

“…We’ll sit down and reflect on this season and how we move forward.”

Liam Lawson, Yuki Tsunoda in the sister Racing Bulls have been muted as possible replacements for Sergio Perez, likewise Red Bull junior driver Isack Hadjar.
