F1: Piastri claims dominant Bahrain GP victory in 50th career race

Oscar Piastri claimed a dominant victory in his 50th Formula 1 race at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, Afrosport reports.

The Australian started from pole and despite a safety car period, finished a solid 15.499 seconds clear of Mercedes’ George Russell who kept second place despite hitting the DRS button when he was not supposed to during the race.

Current championship leader Lando Norris claimed third in the other McLaren after starting in sixth place and receiving a five-second time penalty in the race for a false start.

Piastri is now second overall in the drivers’ standings and is three points behind teammate Norris.

Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were fourth and fifth while reigning world champion Max Verstappen came home in sixth but dropped to third in the championship standings.

The four-time champion finished ahead of Pierre Gasly who scored Alpine’s first points of the season.

Haas’ Esteban Ocon, the other Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda and the other Haas of Oliver Bearman completed the top 10.

The next round of racing is the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit next weekend.
