Ex-RB Leipzig boss Tedesco appointed new Belgium coach

Former RB Lepzig manager Domenico Tedesco has been appointed as head coach of Belgium’s national team.

The 37-year-old German-Italian, who previously coached German clubs Schalke 04, RB Leipzig and Russian outfit Spartak Moscow, signed a deal until the end of the 2024 European Championship in Germany.

Tedesco replaces Roberto Martinez, who led Belgium to a third-place finish at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and was in charge of the team for six years. The Spaniard stepped down after Belgium failed to progress to the knockout stage of the 2022 tournament in Qatar, and has since become manager of Portugal.

Tedesco on his new appointment said: “For me it is a great honour to be the new head coach of Belgium. I’m really looking forward to the task and I’m extremely motivated. I had a very good feeling right from the first conversation.”

Tedesco’s first match in charge will be an Euro 2024 qualifier against Sweden on March 24 in Stockholm and a trip to Cologne to tackle Germany four days later.
