Unity Cup 2025: Super Eagles triumph over Jamaica on penalties to win tournament

The Super Eagles won the Unity Cup 2025 tournament with a 5-4 victory on penalties over Jamaica in Saturday’s final at Gtech Community Stadium after the game ended 2-2 in regular time, Afrosport reports.

Nigeria were fresh off a 2-1 win over West African rivals Ghana in the semi-finals, while the Jamaicans got the better of Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago in the other semi.

The Super Eagles were the ones to open proceedings in the ninth minute when Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi played a long pass that found Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers, who laid the ball into Moses Simon’s path to finish off in a composed fashion.

Jamaica, however, equalised two minutes later. Renaldo Cephas made a darting run down the left flank and his pass sliced through the Nigerian defence to find Kaheim Dixon, who was well positioned to put the ball past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The scores remained level until the 52nd minute when Nathan Tella played a short pass to Samuel Chukwueze, who made his way into the box, skipping past a few challenges from the Jamaican defence before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Shaquan Davis.

The Reggae Boyz were able to draw level for the second time in the 63rd minute. Cephas once again put in another fine cross that found the legs of Jonathan Russell, who blasted the ball in.

The game went into penalties, and Jamaica missed one while Nigeria converted all of theirs to make it three consecutive Unity Cup triumphs after winning the previous editions in 2002 and 2004.
