Nineteen members of Team Kano tragically lost their lives in a road accident on Saturday while returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival, Afrosport reports.

The incident occurred near Dakatsalle Bridge, approximately 50 kilometers from Kano, shortly after the team had passed through Kaduna State.

The accident involved a coaster bus carrying about 30 athletes and officials, many of whom had just concluded their participation in the national event. The crash claimed numerous lives and left several others injured, marking a dark day for the Kano sporting community.

In response to the heartbreaking event, the Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the state government and the people of Kano.

“This is an incredibly painful and tragic moment for all of us,” Hon. Kwankwaso said. “We are deeply saddened by the news of the fatal accident involving our athletes, young men and women who represented Kano State with dedication and pride. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased, the injured, and everyone affected by this immense loss.”

The Commissioner described the incident as a period of mourning for the entire state and pledged the government’s full support for the survivors and bereaved families. He assured that all necessary medical care would be provided to those injured and that steps would be taken to offer emotional and financial support to the families of the victims.

Kwankwaso also extended his gratitude to first responders and medical personnel for their swift actions and continued care for the victims. He emphasised that the government would conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident and ensure accountability and improved safety for future travels.

Reaffirming the state’s commitment, Kwankwaso stated that the welfare and security of Kano’s athletes remain a top priority, and measures would be strengthened to safeguard all representatives in future competitions, both at home and abroad.
