Europa League: Odobert scores brace as Tottenham beat AZ Alkmaar to reach last eight

French forward Wilson Odobert scored a brace as Tottenham Hotspur beat AZ Alkmaar 3-1 on Thursday night to reach the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, Afrosport reports.

Tottenham turned around a 1-0 deficit in the first leg with Odobert taking his season tally to two goals in three Europa League matches, while James Maddison scored the other.

After a loose play from Alkmaar, Odobert found the back of net in the 26th minute, scoring the opener with a sweeping finish from a Dominic Solanke pass.

Spurs doubled their lead two minutes into the second half through Maddison, with the English midfielder finding the bottom corner after an interchange with Son Heung-min.

Alkmaar, meanwhile, pulled one back through Peer Koopmeiners to level the tie on aggregate. The 24-year-old Dutch midfielder found the bottom corner after Tottenham failed to clear the ball outside their box.

The hosts needed a victory by a two-goal margin to avoid extra time and Odobert restored their two-goal lead with another close-range finish off a pass from Solanke.

The result meant Spurs are unbeaten in their last 16 home games in Europe and Ange Postecoglou’s men will take on Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt in next month’s quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho and Fenerbahce have been eliminated by Rangers following a 3-2 score after penalties at the Ibrox Stadium.

Fenerbahce won the game 2-0 in regulation to even the tie 3-3 on aggregate and headed to a penalty shoot-out, but Dusan Tadic, Fred, and Mert Hakan Yandas all missed their spot kicks to see Rangers progress into the quarter-finals.
