Euro 2024: Spalletti to stay on as Italy head coach despite tournament exit

Luciano Spalletti has confirmed that he will stay on as Italy head coach after the Azzurri were knocked out of the Euro 2024 championship by Switzerland.

The round of 16 defeat cast a doubt over the former Napoli manager’s future in leading the Azzurri who were defending champions heading into Germany.

All that has now been put to bed as he aims to rejuvenate the squad.

“I don’t play the sliding doors game. What if I did this or that. if… Why? Because in my life I have always been careful to look ahead because that is what I will carry into my future. I can’t go back,” Spalletti said.

“I try to make an effort. It’s clear that, in hindsight, I made some mistakes. I tried to rejuvenate the team a bit. Since I’m staying here, this will be done even more in the future.”

He added: “…We are starting from scratch one because yesterday’s game let us start from zero. Therefore, in future choices, I will try to further rejuvenate the squad to recreate a group as quickly as possible because managing certain things, being careful about the potential lack of personality or the reference to a leader, did not give me the answers I was looking for. Consequently, we will try to create a future with more youth.”

Spalletti became Italy head coach in August 2023 after leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years.

He replaced Roberto Mancini who resigned and went on to become Saudi Arabia manager.
