Slovakia captain Milan Skriniar believes a win against England in the Euro 2024 round of 16 will be the best result in his country’s football history.
Slovakia advanced into the knockout stage after finishing as one of the third-best teams in the group phase with four points in Group E.
Francesco Calzona’s side could make history by qualifying for the quarter-final of the European Championship for the first time in their history after reaching the round of 16 on two previous occasions (2016 and 2024).
“Of course, it will be something special, not only for me but also for all Slovakian people,” Skriniar said. “If Slovakia beats England it will be I think the best result for Slovakia in history or one of the best. I hope and I believe that we can do it.
The Paris Saint-Germain centre-back is also aware of England’s attacking threat led by Harry Kane and he is positive about a win at the Veltins-Arena.
Skriniar added: “So far, like you said! I played against him two or three times already. I know how strong he is. It will be a really good game, good duels. So I’m happy and I can’t wait to play the game.
“They have big, big stars. Big players, really good players. But, we saw some games in the group and like a team they are not on the best (way) so far.
“So this can be our opportunity to beat them because if we play like a team, like one man, like we did during the qualification and during the group stage… I hope and I believe that we can beat them.”
