EFL Cup: Spurs end Man City’s unbeaten start; Man Utd, Arsenal & Liverpool into Q/final

Manchester City’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end after losing 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup round of 16 on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.

Timo Werner put Spurs ahead in the fifth minute with his first goal since March, latching onto a pass from Dejan Kulusevski, before putting the ball beyond goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

Ange Postecoglou’s men got a second courtesy of a long-range strike from Senegal international Pape Matar Sarr 20 minutes after Werner’s opener.

City, however drew one back in first half stoppage time through Portuguese midfielder Matheus Nunes, but despite losing defender Micky van de Ven to injury in the early stages, Spurs still held on to get the result against City and progress to the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere , Manchester United responded to Erik ten Hag’s sacking by thrashing Leicester City 5-2 at Old Trafford to also reach the last eight in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first game as interim manager.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro netted twice in the first half to go with another brace from captain Bruno Fernandes, while Alejandro Garnacho scored one as United cancelled out goals from Bilal El Khannouss and Conor Coady for the Foxes.

Meanwhile at St. James Park, Alexander Isak’s 23rd minute goal and an Axel Disasi’s own goal three minutes later, propelled Newcastle to a 2-0 win at the expense of Chelsea as the Magpies got revenge for last weekend’s defeat to the same opponent in the Premier League.

At Villa Park, Eberechi Eze and Daichi Kamada were on target as Crystal Palace beat Aston Villa 2-1; Arsenal thrashed Preston 3-0 at the Deepdale with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri and Kai Havertz; and Cody Gakpo scored twice, while Luis Dias added another to help holders Liverpool to a hard-fought 3-2 win away at Brighton.

The draws for the quarterfinals were conducted immediately with Manchester United set to head to North London to take on Tottenham; Arsenal are drawn against Crystal Palace; Newcastle get Brentford; and Southampton will face Liverpool.
