Done Deal: Ghana’s Baba Rahman joins PAOK on free transfer

Ghanaian defender Baba Rahman has completed a move to PAOK Thessaloniki on a free transfer following the termination of his contract with Premier League club Chelsea.

The 29-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Greek side until 2025 with an option for a further year, marking his second stint with the club.

Rahman, who brings his eight-year stay with the Blues to an end, moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2015 in a five-year deal worth around €14 million. However, he found it tough to cement his spot in the side and has since been on loan on several occasions.

The fullback had two loan spells at German side Schalke 04 in the 2016–17 and 2018–19 seasons. After his time in the Bundelsiga, he secured another temporary deal to play in France for Reims, a deal that only lasted for six months.

He joined then-newly promoted Mallorca in the Spanish league in the summer of 2019 before securing another short-term loan move to PAOK for his first stint at the club, scoring on his debut against Lamia to help them to a 4-0 win.

The Black Stars defender then secured back-to-back loan moves to English Championship side Reading, where he spent the whole of the 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons.

Rahman is a full Ghana international, having made his debut in 2014 and going on to make 51 appearances, scoring once and providing eight assists.

Three-time Super League winners PAOK finished the 2022-23 season in fourth and have been on a two-year trophy drought since winning the Greek Cup in the 2020-21 season.
