Manchester United have announced the departure of Dan Ashworth as sporting director just five months after his arrival, Afrosport reports.
He started his new role at United on July 1 after spending five months on gardening leave at Newcastle United, as part of a new leadership structure at Old Trafford under minority owner Jim Radcliffe that included Jason Wilcox as technical director from Southampton and Omar Berrada as chief executive from Manchester City.
Ashworth’s departure was reportedly finalised in a meeting after the Red Devils’ 3-2 Premier League defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
“Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement,” read a statement on the club website.
“We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”
Ashworth previously worked with West Bromwich Albion, the FA and Brighton and Hove Albion before moving to Newcastle after the takeover by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund in 2022.
United have had a poor season so far which led to the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. Things have not yet kicked into gear under new head coach Ruben Amorim with the team still struggling to adapt to his methods in a back three.
