Manchester City beat Manchester United 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time to win the 2024 Community Shield.
Marcus Rashford missed a golden chance to give United the lead but his effort from inside the area hit the the post.
Captain Bruno Fernandes had a stunning goal disallowed for offside after he positioned himself behind Man City’s defence and took a shot from outside the box that sailed into the net.
City were finally broken when substitute and Copa America champion Alejandro Garnacho cut inside the box and scored in the 82nd minute.
However, substitute Bernardo Silva headed home Oscar Bobb’s cross in the 89th minute to level the match and send the match to penalties.
Manuel Akanji then scored the decisive spot kick for City after capitalising on Jonny Evans’ miss to win the shootout and earn Pep Guardiola’s side their first silverware of the 2024/25 season.

Man United became the first side to lose the Community Shield 10 times, moving them past City’s nine finishes as runners-up.
City will begin their Premier League title defence against Chelsea next Sunday while United will battle Fulham on Friday to officially kickstart the league season.
