Chukwuemeka & Madueke: How impact of Nigerian descents sent Chelsea into semi-final

Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke came off the bench and scored to hand Chelsea a 4-2 win over Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues raced to a 2-0 first half lead against the Foxes thanks to Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer, Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson assisting the former for the first goal. Raheem Sterling also had a penalty saved by Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.

Enzo Maresca’s men were able to stage a comeback after the break as Axel Disasi put the ball into his own net followed by Anglo-Congolese forward Stephy Mavididi’s sublime strike.

Callum Doyle was however given a straight red card in the 73rd minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity which handed Chelsea the momentum.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino brought on Chukwuemeka and Madueke in the 78th and 86th minute respectively for Mykhailo Mudryk and Sterling and it proved to be a masterstroke move as Chukwuemeka made it 3-2 in the second minute of eight additional minutes before Madueke put the game beyond doubt with the very last effort of the game.

It was Chukwuemeka’s second goal for Chelsea since joining from Aston Villa in the summer of 2022 while it was Mudeke’s third of the season, matching his tally from the previous campaign.

Chelsea will go play the winner of Sunday’s other quarter-final between Manchester United and Liverpool in the semi-finals.
