Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana will miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed on Wednesday.
The Blues last weekend confirmed that Fofana, who had not featured since last month’s 1-0 loss at Arsenal, had undergone successful surgery to repair a muscle injury.
The 24-year-old has missed Chelsea’s last two games—a 1-0 win over Tottenham and Sunday’s goalless draw at Brentford.
Albeit confirming Fofana’s injury, Maresca is hopeful for the return of Belgian midfielder Romeo Lavia and Spanish forward Marc Guiu before the end of the campaign.
Lavia has started only Premier League games for the club since 1 December, and the 21-year-old, who has also been battling with a hamstring problem, suffered a setback on his return against Arsenal on 16 March.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Guiu, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona last summer, last appeared for the Blues in a 2-1 win over West Ham in early February.
“Unfortunately, Wes [Fofana] will be out for the rest of the season,” the Italian said in his pre-match conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa Conference League tie.
“Hopefully we can get [back] Romeo very soon. I don’t know if for the next game, but he looks quite good in terms of being back soon.
“We have good news on Marc. From today he looks quite good, much better, and he can be back before the season finishes.
“We are going to support them for sure because they are our players, because they are young, and because they are human beings and in a moment where they struggle for different reasons, we need to support them.”
