CHAN 2024: Nigeria exit tournament with victory over Congo

Nigeria concluded their campaign at the 2024 African Nations Championship with a 2-0 win over the Republic of Congo in their final Group D game in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

The Super Eagles’ exit from the tournament was confirmed in the previous game which they lost 4-0 to Sudan.

The game against the Congolese was only for pride and they made something out of it as Anas Yusuf scored from close range after he was set up by Sikiru Alimi who headed the ball into his path from a Taiwo Abdulrafiu cross in the 56th minute.

It was the first goal of the tournament for Eric Chelle’s side and they doubled it in added time thanks to forward Alimi with the assist coming from his Remo Stars teammate Ismaila Sodiq.

Just moments before the goal, Congo left-back Charles Atipo was given a straight red card for a dangerous foul.

Nigeria finished third in the group with three points while the Congolese ended bottom with two points.

Meanwhile, Sudan topped Group D after playing a goalless draw with reigning CHAN champions Senegal.

The Teranga Lions finished the game with 10 men after Mbaye Yaya Ly was given a second yellow card in added time.
