The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday announced the postponement of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) slated to be held in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Afrosport reports.
The eighth edition of the CHAN tournament was initially scheduled to take place between 1-28 February 2025 but has now been moved to August 2025, with the exact date to be revealed by CAF in due course.
Although significant progress has been made in terms of the infrastructure needed to host the event across the three East African nations, CAF technical and infrastructure experts have advised that more time is needed to ensure the facilities are up to the required standards.
CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, thanked the leaders of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for their commitment and steadfastness towards ensuring the required infrastructure is achieved.
He said: “I would like to express my deep gratitude to President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their leadership, commitment and the good progress that has been made in building and upgrading the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals and other infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for hosting a successful African Nations Championship.
“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful CHAN.”
The official draw for the CHAN 2024 tournament, however, will go on as planned on Wednesday, 15 January, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, with the ceremony to commence at 8pm local time (6pm Nigerian Time).
