Nigeria’s Edo Queens are in search of a first-ever CAF Women’s Champions League medal as they gear up to face Egyptian side FC Masar in the third-place match on Friday, Afrosport reports.
The Nigerian champions were undone by a late equaliser and two extra-time goals in their 3-1 loss to TP Mazembe in the semifinals on Tuesday, while Masar were dealt a huge blow as a 99th minute freekick handed them a 2-1 defeat in the hands of hosts AS FAR.
Edo Queens have scored six goals and conceded four in their previous four matches in the tournament, while their Egyptian counterpart has scored four and also let in four.
The two teams will rekindle their rivalry from the earlier stages, where they played out a goalless draw in their Group B encounter, as they are set to face off at the Stade El Abdi in Jadida at 6pm WAT.
Edo Queens coach Moses Aduku, however, has urged his team to forget their anguish over losing in the semifinal and focus on winning the bronze medal.
“So far, so good we want to thank God where we found ourselves,” he said. “It’s a football game, you win some, you lose some.
“Like you said, we are not out yet, we are fighting for the third place. So by tomorrow [Friday] I’m expecting my girls to go all out and see how we can win [the bronze medal].
“I know it is not going to be easy, the Egyptian side is a good team, and the last time we played them it was goalless, and I believe goalless will not give us a bronze. So, definitely, we need to go all out to win.”
The winner of the third-place match will receive a whopping prize money of USD 350,000, while the fourth-placed team will earn 300,000 USD.
