Sundowns held by Fluminense in Miami to exit Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Fluminense at the Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday which saw them eliminated from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Afrosport reports.

The South African giants needed a win to progress to the knockout phase after their narrow 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund last time out in Cincinnati.

Sundowns were the more threatening side against Fluminense in Miami Gardens, with three shots on target and one big chance in the first half. Despite also having more possession at 68%, the Pretoria outfit failed to find the back of the net as their opponents from Rio de Janeiro were resolute at the back.

The result ultimately saw Sundowns finish third in Group F with four points while Fluminense ended in second place with five points.

The exit of the 2016 CAF Champions League winners means all four African representatives at the 2025 Club World Cup (Al Ahly, Esperance and Wydad Casablanca) failed to make it to the next round of the intercontinental competition.

Meanwhile, Dortmund topped Group F with seven points after defeating South Korea side Ulsan HD 1-0 in Cincinnati.
