A new trophy and identity will be unveiled for the CAF Champions League ahead of this season’s two-legged final, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed on Friday.
CAF will unveil the new trophy at the offices of its name sponsor—TotalEnergies—in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Thursday, 22 May, with African football legends as well as the two competing clubs in the final, Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC, expected to be in attendance.
Sundowns reached the final after beating two-time defending champions Al Ahly with a 1-1 aggregate score, while Pyramids overpowered Kazier Chiefs 3-2 on aggregate to advance to their first CAF Champions League final.
The unveiling ceremony marks another forward step in the relationship between CAF and the TotalEnergies brand, after the petroleum company agreed to a new four-year extension with the African football body.
This also follows CAF’s goal of fostering the quality of the continent’s interclub competitions, with the design and details of the new trophy to be unveiled next Thursday.
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns, who are in their third CAF Champions League final and are aiming for a second title, will host Pyramids at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria in the first leg slated for Saturday, 24 May.
Both teams will then lock horns in the second leg on Sunday, 1 June, at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.
