CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United cruise to comfortable win in Group C opener

Rivers United started their CAF Confederation Cup group stage campaign with a 3-0 home win over Angolan side Academica do Lobito in Group C on Sunday evening.

The Port Harcourt outfit made it into the group stage for the second consecutive season for the very first time, and got off to a flying start at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo with Ghanaian midfielder Samuel Antwi giving them the lead in just the third minute of play.

It remained 1-0 to Rivers until the start of the second half when Paul Odeh doubled their lead.

Alex Oyowah, who assisted Antwi for the opening goal, did so again for Shedrack Asiegbu for the third and final goal in the 61st minute to give Rivers early control of Group C.


The other Group C game saw Tunisian side Club Africain defeat 10-man Dreams FC of Ghana 2-0.

In other notable Sunday Confederation Cup results, Egyptian sides Future FC and Zamalek recorded 1-0 wins over Supersport United and Abu Salim FC respectively. Stade Malien were the biggest winners of the day with a 3-1 away win over Congolese side Diables Noirs while Sagrada of Angola defeated Guinean side Academie SOAR 2-0.
