CAF Champions League: Mamelodi Sundowns, Raja Casablanca claim big away victories

Round two of the 2022-23 CAF Champions League group stage produced a lot action with South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Raja Casablanca of Morocco being the biggest winners.

Action began on Friday in Benghazi where Sudanese heavyweights Al-Merreikh held Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek to a goalless draw in Group D. It was followed by Sundowns defeating Coton Sports of Cameroon 3-1 in Garoua courtesy of a brace from Cassius Mailula and a sublime finish from Thapelo Morena to make it two wins from two in Group B.

Friday ended with Algerian side JS Kabylie readjusting from last week’s goalless draw at Petro Atletico de Luanda by defeating defending champions Wydad Casablanca of Morocco 1-0 in Group A.

Saturday started with 10-man Vipers of Uganda holding Horoya of Guinea to a goalless draw in Group C followed by Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan defeating Egyptian neighbours Al Ahly 1-0 in Group B thanks to DR Congo forward Makabi Lilepo.

Next up was Raja Casablanca’s 3-0 win at Tanzanian giants Simba SC, Hamza Khabba, Soufiane Benjdida and Ismail Mokadem all getting on the score sheet. The victory maintained the Moroccans 100% start in Group C.

In the other Group A game, Petro Atletico de Luanda got their first three points on board with victory at DR Congo side AS Vita while Esperance of Tunisia rounded the weekend with a 1-0 at Algerian outfit Belouizdad.

Round three action takes place on February 24 and 25 with more mouth-watering fixtures, including Al-Merreikh against Belouizdad, Esperance hosting Zamalek, Vipers up against Simba and Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly taking on Sundowns.
