Akor Adams: How Nigerian forward’s first goal of 2024 moved Montpellier closer to Ligue 1 survival

Klopp: Liverpool boss admits challenge of regaining momentum in PL title race

Akor Adams was on target for the first time in 2024 as Montpellier played out a 1-1 draw with Nantes in Ligue 1 on Friday night.

The fixture was a battle to avoid relegation and the Nigerian forward put his side ahead on home soil in the second minute via a swift counter attacking move.

It was the eighth league goal of the season for Akor Adams which took him level with Teji Savanier as Montpellier’s highest goalscorers this term.

It did not take too long for Nantes to equalise with Matthis Abline doing so five minutes later off an assist from Egypt forward Mostafa Mohamed.

The game ended with Montpellier being reduced to nine men after Lucas Mincarelli and Arnaud Nordin were given straight red cards for reckless fouls in added time.

A win would have guaranteed Akor Adams and Montpellier’s safety but the draw still took them nine points clear of the relegation/promotion playoff spot in 12th place with four matches to go.

Michel Der Zakarian’s side are now unbeaten in their last five matches (W3 D2) and victory at Toulouse next Friday would seal their survival status.

Nantes meanwhile are in 14th place, four points shy of the relegation/promotion playoff spot.
