AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Sao Tome and Principe are like children to Nigeria – Henry Nwosu

Former Green Eagles captain Henry Nwosu believes Nigeria have all it takes to stamp their authority in the final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sao Tome and Principe on Sunday.

Nwosu, who was the youngest member of the victorious 1980 AFCON winning squad, said the three-time African champions who are ranked 39th in the world by FIFA are not on the same level with Sao Tome and Principe who occupy the 186th position in the world.

The first-leg encounter between the two countries ended in a 10-0 victory in favour of the Super Eagles in June 2022, with Napoli talisman Victor Osimhen banging four goals in the game that took place in Morocco.

“We should be able to upstage them because it is a tradition for us to beat them,” Nwosu told Afrosport. “We will still beat them again but I can’t forecast the number of goals we will score.

“Mere hearing the name Nigeria they will begin to shiver. I don’t think they pose any threats to the Nigerian team because they might want to be tough.

“They are like our children, not even up to the level of being our brothers so we will teach them the best way.”

The Super Eagles have already qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast next year but a victory would cement their spot as Group A leaders.

Sunday’s match between Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe will take place at the Godwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo by 5pm (West African Time).
