AFCON 2023: Ghana switch training camp from Johannesburg to Kumasi

The Black Stars of Ghana will now pitch their training camp for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the city of Kumasi in the country.

Chris Hughton’s side were initially scheduled to camp in the South African city of Johannesburg from Sunday, December 31 but will now open their camp in Kumasi beginning from Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed that changes were made after a meeting between the FA and the technical committee. Consequently, the international friendly match lined up against Botswana for Monday, January 8 has been called off with efforts ongoing to find a new opponent ahead of the AFCON 2023.

The Black Stars’ camp is expected to be inaccessible to the public and the media, with training sessions to be behind closed doors. However, there will be a media session with the Black Stars players and officials at a later date before their departure to the Ivory Coast.

Hughton is yet to announce his final list for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but they are drawn against record holders Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique in Group B of the tournament that starts on January 13.
