AFCON 2023: Egypt suffer Salah’s injury blow

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah will miss Egypt’s next two matches at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to a hamstring injury.

Salah limped off with an injury towards the half-time of the Pharaohs’ 2-2 draw with Ghana in a Group B match on Thursday.

After medical examinations on Friday, the Egyptian Football Association has now confirmed that the two-time African Footballer of the Year will only play in Ivory Coast if Egypt make it into the quarter-final stage.

The statement read: “The scans that Mohamed Salah, the captain of the Egyptian national team, underwent confirmed his injury to the hamstring.

“Salah will be absent from the next two matches in the Africa Cup of Nations against Cape Verde, and then in the Round of 16 in the event of qualification.”

Salah’s only goal at the 2023 AFCON came from the penalty spot in the Pharaohs’ 2-2 draw against Mozambique in their opening Group B fixture.

With Salah out of action, Trabzonspor forward Mahmoud Trezeguet, Zamalek star Ahmed Zizo and Pyramids winger Mostafa Fathi are available options for Rui Vitoria in their final group game against leaders Cape Verde on Monday.

The Pharaohs are currently second in Group B with just two points after two matches.
