Nothing could separate DR Congo and Zambia as they played out a 1-1 draw in their 2023 AfricaCup of Nations Group F encounter at Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro on Wednesday night.
The Leopards were making a return to the competition since their round of 16 exit in 2019 while Chipolopolo were back since 2015 when they exited from the group stage.
The Zambians were the ones to strike first, Red Star Belgrade midfielder Kings Kangwa with an audacious long range strike from a quick Patson Daka throw in that evaded two Congolese defenders and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau.
DR Congo struck back four minutes later when former Villarreal forward Cedric Bakambu latched on to long pass from midfield and laid it for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa to tap in from close range.
Sebastien Desabre’s men continued to pile pressure on the Zambians but the 2012 AFCON champions were able to keep them at bay for the rest of the 90 minutes.
