‘A nightmare to play against’ – Williamson praises Agyemang performance in England win

Leah Williamson called her England teammate Michelle Agyemang a nightmare to play against after she scored a crucial goal that sent the Lionesses to back-to-back Women’s European Championship finals, Afrosport reports.

The 19-year-old came off the bench for Williamson with five minutes left to play, with the team 1-0 down. She however equalised deep in added time with England ultimately winning 2-1 after extra time.

It was back-to-back games Agyemang scored, having netted similarly against Sweden in the quarter-finals to tie the game 2-2 from two goals down and ultimately win on penalties.

Reacting to her performance, Williamson said: “She feels inevitable right now.

“She is quality. What she brings, she is a nightmare to play against. I’m glad she is my teammate for club and country. She deserves her flowers, I hope she gets them, I hope she enjoys [the semi-final victory] and I hope she is ready to go at the weekend.”

Agyemang, who is of Ghanaian heritage, has scored three goals in just four caps for England, including a goal on her debut against Belgium in a 3-2 defeat in the UEFA Nations League in April, netting the second consolation goal in the 81st minute.

When quizzed about what the secret was behind her knack for scoring late goals, she responded: “I don’t know. It’s by the grace of God. We are doing wonders as a team, and I am so proud that I can say I’m a part of this team.”

Meanwhile, former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha, of Nigerian heritage, said of Agyemang’s display in the tournament so far: “She’s 19 years old in a European Championship semi-final and she played like she had been there tonnes of times, like some of her team-mates. She is an absolute star.”

England will have the chance to win the title they won three years ago at Wembley against either Germany or Spain in the final.
