Middlesbrough appointed former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards their new manager after the dismissal of Michael Carrick, Afrosport reports.
The 42-year-old departed Luton by mutual consent in January and takes over from Carrick, who was relieved of his duties after failing to get Boro into the Championship playoff places last season.
Edwards famously secured Premier League promotion for Luton for the 2023-24 season, but the Hatters suffered immediate relegation and returned to the Championship for the following campaign. The Bedfordshire failed to return to the top flight but were instead relegated to League One after finishing 22nd in the second tier.
He will now be tasked with getting Boro back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 and will be assisted by Adi Viveash and Harry Watling.
Speaking on his appointment, Edwards told the club website: “It’s a real privilege to be given the opportunity to be head coach of this great football club. It’s something that’s not lost on me, how big this is, how important this is, and what it means to people. There is an amazing fanbase.
“It felt instantly that this was right for me, and it got me excited. If I was going to come back in, I wanted to come back in at a place where we had a chance, and we have a really good chance here.
“We have a brilliant owner who historically gives his coaches time, support, and the tools needed to try and be successful. I can’t wait to get started now.”
We’re delighted to announce the appointment of Rob Edwards as our new head coach.
Welcome to Boro, Rob! 🔴⚪️
